Trevor Noah has been performing for a little over 2 years but is already recognized as one of the top comedians in the country. His rise in the comedy realm has been nothing short of meteoric. His attributes as a comedian - sharp wit, intelligent commentary, unmistakable charm and clinical delivery have made Trevor Noah a very popular performer in South Africa. Such has been his impact on the local comedy scene that Trevor went on to win the “Best Breakthrough Comedy Act of the Year” at this year’s South African Comedy Awards and was also nominated for in the “Best Comedian of the Year” category. A fitting accolade and acknowledgement for a comedian that has taken South Africa by storm.
He has performed in numerous shows all over the country and has become accustomed to sharing the stage with South African comedy heavyweights at such an early stage in his career and it was no surprise when he chosen as the local act to represent South Africa in the Jozi Comedy Festival alongside 6 headlining acts from 6 different countries. In doing so he got to share the stage with Latino comedy legend Paul Rodriguez, Australia’s biggest selling comedian Carl Barron and top UK ventriloquist Paul Zerdin ( who has performed for the Queen 3 times ), one of Canada’s finest comedians Sugar Sammy and managed to hold his own earning rave reviews. Due to his performances then, he has been asked to be on the bill again this year! A first for a local act.
He has now performed at all the biggest comedy events on the local calendar and including the – The Cape Town International Comedy Festival. Amongst his career highlights includes opening for international superstar Russell Peters on the South African leg of his “Outsourced World Tour”. He also got to charm audiences with his comedy nationwide opening for the world famous iconic crooner, Julio Iglesias on his South African Tour that took place earlier this year.
He well and truly announced his arrival on the scene when he was the only comedian in the entire country who made the cut for the international audition of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”. The auditions we held in Miami, Florida and although he didn’t make the final round – he gave a great account of himself as one of 2 comedians to be chosen from the entire African continent. The Homecoming Revolution also invited to perform as an ambassador in a series of concerts celebrating South Africa featuring prominent personalities such as Francois Pienaar, Desmond Tutu and more.
His talent and ability has not gone unnoticed and this has led to various television appearances. He was chosen as the anchor of celebrity gossip talk show Real Goboza, which aired in 2008 and also saw Trevor participate as one of the celebrity personalities in the South African version of the popular reality dance competition, Strictly Come Dancing where he ended up coming second! He got to host the prime time reality show – The Axe Sweet Life with Eugene Khoza to great ratings. He charm unmistakeable, he was also cast as the co-host with Pabi Moloi in the interactive dating show – Amazing Date. He has also made appearances on 2 of the country's top soapies, done commercials for McDonalds and the South African Revenue Service. With more television shows in the pipeline and continuous flattering reviews for his performances, Trevor Noah is definitely on his way to the top.
Not only does he entertain with his undoubted comedy talent but also presents with such verve and panache, that he is now acknowledged as one of the best presenters in the country so much so that he has now been contracted to host the prestigious South African Music Awards for the next 3 years. This is after he hosted the 2009 instalment with such aplomb and great reviews from the media and all who were present. Amongst his many hosting achievements he has also hosted the country’s Emmy Awards in the South African Film and Television Awards and as if that wasn’t enough he was bestowed with the honour of MC’ing the State President’s inauguration!
It was no wonder that the Sunday Times recently named him as one of the personalities destined for greatness in 2008! What more can be said about one of South Africa’s brightest stars!
